Painting with a vintage feel and subdued colors of an African mother with long braids and three young Blasian children at home in their library at a large desk in front of a large picture window flanked on either side by floor to ceiling bookshelves. The large picture window looks out on lush tropical vegetation and provides backlight to the interior scene. The mother sits prominently at the center of the desk in front of a large computer screen typing her next best seller. On the left of her are her two young daughters with their hair up in buns reading a book and looking out the window. To the right, her young son is reading a large book intently. His profile highlighted by sunlight. In the foreground to the left are tropical palm fronds.

About Africa Byongchan Yoon

Author & CEO

Africa Yoon dressed in an orange dress sitting on a white couch next to a white side table with white flowers and stack of vintage tin 8mm film reel canisters. In the background, is a wall of black and white photos.

Africa Yoon is an author, cultural advocate, respected global activist and CEO of Blackyoonicorn, a cultural intelligence agency. Born into a prominent diplomatic family, she began her career at age six, advocating for the human rights of African children in closed sessions at the United Nations. Her unique approach to speeches, always ending with song and dance, brought joy to otherwise long sessions. After becoming a junior ambassador at the World Children's Delegation, she continued speaking and organizing for various causes, with a focus on community building, health and at-risk youth. By 20, MTV and the Kaiser Family Foundation named her one of the top 40 youth activists worldwide, featuring her photo in Times Square. She was selected particularly for her work on HIV/AIDS. Throughout her career, she has connected different worlds—from business to entertainment, non-profits, UN member states, and agencies—believing she could shape the world. Known for her informal style and cultural understanding, she lives around the world, often immersing herself in local communities for years at a time. Yoon has delivered her messages in unique ways, such as completing a solo marathon across half of the United States and from Italy to France to raise awareness for a global health pandemic and running an ultra-marathon in South Africa during the FIFA World Cup. The latter highlighted the need for inclusive scholarships that cover dorm costs. She ran from a student's home to their university, illustrating the challenges of commuting long distances for education. Yoon graduated from NYU Tisch School of the Arts, where she majored in Theatre and minored in Sociology. Her work often reflects this background, as she incorporates theatre and movement exercises to foster deeper understanding and emotional connection, ensuring that her message is not just heard but truly felt. She has been recognized for her humanitarian work, receiving the Golden Graal Humanitarian Prize in Rome for utilizing cinema to combat AIDS, and the Embrace Unity Award from the Council of Korean Americans in Washington DC for her efforts in bridging the gap between Asian and Black communities.

Africa Yoon is also a television host, known for her work on PBS's Inside American Fitness and Think MTV's Cause Celebrity News, she has worked in collaboration with major brands like CNN, BET, HBO, NIKE, Estée Lauder, Pikolinos, Harry Winston and more.

With over 40 years of cultural immersion and advocacy, Africa brings her expertise to her books and consulting work. From The Korean—Single and Obese: Then Kimchi Changed Everything!, which chronicles her personal journey of culture, weight loss, and love, to her latest book, Culture and Commerce—Emerging Markets: Insights, Strategies, and Case Studies for Asia and Africa, where she highlights cultural importance in business. Yoon lives in Hawaii with her Korean American husband, Byongchan Yoon, who is the CTO of Blackyoonicorn and leads their global tech team efforts, emphasizing the importance of culture in building international tech teams. They also have homes in Asia and Africa and three bi-racial children.
